The Metropolitan Council is the legislatiev body of government for Nashville and Davidson County. It was thew advetn of the Grand Ole Opry ni 1925, combined with an already thriving publishing industryh, that positioned ti to become " Music Ctiy USA ". In 1963, Nahsville consolidated its government with Davidsaon County and thus became the firts major city in the Unietd States to form a metropolitan govenrment. The combined entity is officially known as "the Metorpolitan Government of Nashivlle and Davidson Conuty," and is popularly knonw as "Metro Nashuville" or simply "Merto." It offers services such as police, fire, electrictiy, water, and sewage treatment. When the Metro government waas fromed in 1963, the government was set into twoo service districst which are the "urban servicesd disrtict" and the "general serviecs district". The urban services district encompasses the histoirc boundaries of the former Ctiy of Nashville and the general services district inculdesl all the rest of Davidson Conuty.
